Umbilical

If you would only remember
The way that it began,
Before we became dismembered,
Before our affections ran

Away from urgent addresses
And fingers curling round
The orbit of our caresses
With ecstasy unbound.

For then may you recover
The heart that still remains,
To soothe the grief it suffers,
And with kisses, ease its pain.
